TRAVEL JOURNAL INDEX > The Beginning of the Road

Dawson Creek , British Columbia, Canada  08/16/06 (Day 113)
The Beginning of the Road

Now this is what we call breakfast: homemade blueberry muffins with homegrown berries, oven-baked eggs in ham molds, coffee and fruit salad parfaits. And that’s par for the course at  the Bear Mountain Farm B&B. Fully fueled, we head to Browns' Chevy for a little scheduled maintenance of our Chevy Silverado  before we head out onto the sometimes punishing roads of Canada’s Yukon and Northwest Territories, then into Alaska.

With everything looking ship shape (thanks Browns' Chevy!), we drive into the center of Dawson Creek and find Mile Zero, the actual starting point of the epic Alaska Highway. Now that we’ve found where the road begins, it’s time to start heading for where it ends. Just don’t count on us to take the direct route.

Even though we are ultimately headed into Canada’s Northwest Territories before picking up the Alaska Highway a little further down the line, we are unable to resist getting a taste of the iconic road from it’s very beginning. So we drive the first 40 miles of the Alaska Highway before doubling back and heading into Alberta on our way up to the NWT. We told you not to expect straight lines….
