Le Caméléon Boutique Hotel - Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica :: Hotel Review

Le Caméléon Boutique Hotel - Puerto Viejo, Costa RicaIt’s best to think ofLe Caméléon Boutique Hotel on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica as a blank canvas. When so many of its neighboring hotels have focused on the thatch-roof-hideaway vibe or the Crayola-colorful-Caribbean beach bungalow look Le Caméléon has gone in a totally different design direction: clean, stark, modern and hip. If there wasn’t sand between your toes you’d think you were in a chic, urban hotel.

All 23 rooms and suites are painstakingly white including the furniture, the television and the floor. When I walked into my room it was so bright I was tempted to keep my sunglasses on.   All that white is punctuated with pillows, towels and paintings in one of six different color combinations.

Room Le Caméléon Boutique Hotel - Costa RicaMaids change the color of your accents daily. I started off with orange and brown but returned to my room after servicing the next morning and found bright blue everywhere. It’s almost like getting a new room every day. Some guests have been known to coordinate their outfits to the changing color schemes. There are even LED lights behind the six foot tall quilted white leather headboards which rotate through a color spectrum at the flip of a switch.

Every room has a furnished patio and air conditioning but only the upstairs rooms have fans, which is a shame since air conditioning is not always needed. The balconies off of the top floor rooms are more private as well and give a real sense of being in the jungle.

Room number 25 is the only full suite. Located upstairs, this room has a huge master bedroom, a sleeper sofa in the full living room and 1.5 baths including a jetted tub with a wonderful wood and river stone path leading to it. For some reason the colors never change in this room—the accents are always bright green.

Lounge Le Caméléon Boutique Hotel - Costa RicaJungle spreads out around the hotel and provides the setting for a slender pool covered in jade green tiles. The Numu open-air restaurant and bar is also surrounded nature. As you’re enjoying your breakfast or a cocktail, keep your eyes open for wildlife. I saw a two-toed sloth with a baby less than 10 feet up a tree above the path that leads to the restaurant.

Le Caméléon Boutique Hotel is on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast which is far less visited than the Pacific Coast despite the fact that it boasts some of the country’s best beaches.  Le Caméléon is not directly on the beach, however, the private Numu beach club right across the street offers guests beach beds, a bar, a small library and direct access to glorious Cocles Beach.
