Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of the Baja peninsula  may be awash in mega-size, mega-service, mega-resorts, and many of them are at the top of people’s lists of places to stay before they die. But Casa Natalia  in the neighboring 17th Century town of San Jose del Cabo, offers a more intimate option that’s every bit as chic and indulgent.

Chic and petite Casa Natalia in Baja, Mexico.

Owners Nathalie and Loic Tenoux  like to say that the word Casa in the name of their 16 room high design boutique hotel means “home,” not merely “house.” The couple actually lives in a penthouse over the hotel’s acclaimed restaurant (where Loic is Chef) and they’ve worked hard to make you feel at home too.

Long, slender and secluded, the design of the hotel’s grounds which include 39 palm trees and a heated pool create instant serenity thanks to high richly hued walls and terraced waterfalls that welcome you into the grounds and gently mask any outside noise.

All rooms have private patios with tables and chairs and a hammock all sequestered behind climbing vines. This is where a full hot breakfast (included in the room rate) is served every morning and where you’ll be tempted to lounge the day away.

Rooms are individually decorated in vibrant colors and there’s a playfulness to many of the rooms, like Cuorto Sandia or Watermelon Room (all rooms have names, not numbers) that takes its theme to endearing extremes—just be sure you really like red and green before you book it!

You don’t even have to leave the hotel, which is a member of Mexico Boutique Hotels, to enjoy some of the best food in the area. The hotel’s Mi Cocina restaurant attracts guests from Cabo resorts who come for the local seafood, grilled meats and attentive service as well as the garden setting under the watchful gaze of Earth, Wind, Fire and Sun masks and the flickering light of a dozen braziers all serenaded by those ever-trickling waterfalls. The hotel’s Palapa Lounge is another inviting gathering place where a nightly happy hour for hotel guests adds to the homey atmosphere.

Casa Natalia is not located on a beach. However, the hotel provides convenient and frequent transportation and guest access to one of those mega resorts in Cabo where you can enjoy the beach, pools and facilities before returning home to Casa Natalia.
