Road trip driving route February 2011 in Belize

We started the month in the remote Mountain Pine Ridge area of Belize where we hiked, hung out at Francis Ford Coppola’s resort, and toured the Caracol Mayan archaeological site. From there we headed south of Belmopan where we swam and rappelled and jumped off waterfalls inside amazing caves before getting in a few days of camping and fruitless (but fun) big cat seeking at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s first jaguar preserve.

Next we headed down to the Toledo District in the southern part of Belize where we learned about chocolate production and got charmed by slow-moving Punta Gorda, the most southerly town in Belize. Next up, the beaches of Placencia in the north.

Then we drove up to the Garufina town of Hopkins where we enjoyed a swank villa and then a simple beach cabana, traditional Garufina dishes, some very good banana bread, and searched for ultimately elusive whale sharks. Then we headed up to Belize City where we hopped on board the Aggressor III for a week of SCUBA diving around Turneffe and Lighthouse atolls. See what all those miles look like in our map below.
