Day 60 of our Journey
Our reluctance to leave the UP in Michigan was matched by our desire to see Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior, so we set off again, up Highway 61 (yes, the same one immortalized by Minnesota’s own Bob Dylan).

Entering Minnesota via not so scenic Duluth.
Soon the highway cut through red rocks and the drive often looked like the drive through Mendocino in Northern California with roadway bridges over cascading water feeding into a huge body of water. But that wasn’t the Pacific Ocean out there, just off the highway. It was Lake Superior.

Minnesota’s scenic North Shore along Lake Superior.
As we hit the heart of the north shore, we drove up the shoreline through towns of varying cuteness and then started looking for a place to stay. We couldn’t quite figure out why a Thursday, non-holiday evening would be so busy. Then we realized it was Saturday. We’d been two days off for a week now. We finally found room at the Cascade Lodge in Lutsen and checked in just as a ranger talk about wolves was starting around a campfire out back, complete with s’mores.
